First Steps for New Marker Sites, More to Come!
We are delighted to announce two new WATERMARKERS in Milwaukee!
G: Green Tech Station
(31st & Capitol)
G is for gather, growth, gritty, and Garden Homes. Green Tech Station, at 31st & Capitol, is a unique site that advances Milwaukee’s global leadership in green infrastructure technology and practice. It is a green oasis created on a remediated slice of abandoned industrial wasteland. It is a beautiful, educational amenity amid underserved neighborhoods.
Ñ: The Kinnickinnic River Neighborhood
(16th & Harrison)
The letter Ñ was selected to reflect and recognize the local Latino/a community. The KK River Neighbors in Action hope you will share their pride in this South Side neighborhood, which has welcomed successive waves of hardworking immigrants. From the ethnic Polish who moved here at the turn of the 20th Century to the present mix of Latino/a and other ethnic groups whose water mythologies are celebrated on the uplifting works of public art just north of the river between 13th and 16th streets.
WaterMarks Poetry Workshop
To celebrate our ongoing work at Green Tech Station via our partnership with the NWSCDC and to commemorate national poetry month, WaterMarks artist Portia Cobb worked with local poets, Kavon Cortez Jones, Nakeysha Roberts Washington to create a Poetry Workshop at the Century City Tower. This workshop took place on April 8th and guided residents and local community members to write and perform their poetry -- which focused on our personal relationship with water as part of our everyday lives.
Plunge into WaterMarks!
Join Us for this Once in A Lifetime Experience
CALL / City as Living Laboratory has been working in Milwaukee on WaterMarks since 2014 to build collaborations with artists, scientists, and communities that strengthen water stewardship for a better future. Conceived by Mary Miss, the constellation of WaterMarkers and lighting of the central, 300’ high Jones Island stack will connect people to their precious water resources across the city.
This is a watershed moment for WaterMarks (no pun intended). By fall we will have five WaterMarkers installed – each standing as a beacon to warn of heavy rains and Wi-Fi hot spots to share community stories about the neighborhoods where they stand – connecting people, histories, environments, and visions for the future – through the arts.
We invite you to witness the making of this groundbreaking city-wide initiative Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 29 through October 1.
Connecting Communities

WaterMarks isn't building an atlas of water alone! We work with countless organizations and individuals on this endeavor. WaterMarks Community-University Working Group is a collective of residents, artists, community-based institutions, and researchers who assemble to guide the future of Water in Milwaukee.
Downtown Milwaukee Has a WaterMarks W on the Way!
A new WaterMarks W will be installed in Schlitz Park this August as part of Sculpture Milwaukee's Actual Fractals, Act I, curated by John Riepenhoff.
