CALL CONNECTS - December 2024

2024 has been an exciting year for CALL!

Your support and participation will help us continue programs like these in New York and beyond:

- - - CALL WALK: Exploring Waterways and Flooding in Corona, Queens - - -

Mary Miss, artist and CALL’s founder, was joined by Urban Ecologist Eric Sanderson, and District Manager Christian Cassagnol, on a walk through the streets of Corona, Queens – a recently designated Cloudburst site by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. On the walk, they discussed themes regarding the watershed’s history, topography, and how we can reimagine a more sustainable future. Stay tuned as we expand this project in 2025!

- - - PEDESTRIAN OBSERVATIONS: MAPPING CHINATOWN BANNER INSTALLATION AND TEA DOCENT PROGRAM - - -

Stephen Fan and Myles Zhang’s Pedestrian Observations: Mapping Manhattan Chinatown’s Public Realm banner was on view until this month in Columbus Park. The illustrated map captures elements of Manhattan’s Chinatown to consider the blurred boundary between public and private space and served as a focal point for numerous tea parties hosted by CALL in the park.

Pedestrian Observations will be on view at Immigrant Social Services' Storefront as part of a 10-day pop-up exhibition. The exhibition will open on December 21st, 2024, at 127 Walker Street. If you can't make it and would like a small copy of your own, please feel free to press the button below and request one from us..

- - - FOUR NEW WATERMARKERS INSTALLED IN MILWAUKEE - - -

CALL celebrated the installment of our eighth WaterMark, illuminated blue letters that are part of an artist-based, multi-year initiative to advance water stewardship for the City of Milwaukee. In the center, Mayor Cavalier Johnson is featured proclaiming that “Water really touches everybody in this city” before his declaration of November 12, 2024 as WaterMarks Day. We are excited for more watershed moments such as this in the coming years.

As we look forward to 2025, CALL stands firm in our belief that more livable, sustainable, and equitable urban communities and thriving local ecosystems are best visualized and brought to life through artist and scientist partnership projects and programs. This work, anchored within and centering community members’ experiences and cultural perspectives, is intrinsically collaborative.

We want to invite you into this collaboration. Whether it’s $10 a month or $5,000 a year, every penny will be transformed into tangible programs and projects reaching residents of some of the most environmentally challenged urban areas. We have exciting plans to expand our reach and deepen our impact, but we need your help to turn these plans into reality. We urge you to consider making a year-end gift to support CALL in this pivotal moment. Your support will enable us to experiment, learn, and drive meaningful change.

With deep appreciation and warm regards,

Olivia Georgia
