CALL CONNECTS - April 2024

On view now in Columbus Park:

Pedestrian Observations: Mapping Manhattan Chinatown’s Public Realm

Who benefits from decisions made about the use of public space? Who is included? Who is excluded?

In Pedestrian Observations, artist and art historian Myles Zhang and designer, architect, and urbanist Stephan Fan, delve deep into public space use in Chinatown. Their illustrated map captures elements of Manhattan's Chinatown to consider the blurred boundary between public and private space.

Come to Columbus Park to see the illustration in person! If you're interested in chatting more about public space, we'll be serving tea every week in the park from 4pm-6pm on Fridays and 11am-2pm on Sundays.

Upcoming WALKS this spring:

CALL offerings at The Nature of Cities (TNOC) Festival:

Growing A Green Heart

Film, Multiple Showings, April 15 - 26

Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo’s Growing a Green Heart is a film based on a one-day, experiential community gathering-walk-workshop at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, where participants were invited to develop connections with the ecosystem that surrounds them.

Growing a Green Heart encompasses walking in ways that develop awareness, and focus, and engages in performative exercises that will awaken a personal connection to Nature.

Un Paseo Al Agua

Join artist, Sarah Gail Luther, as she guides us on a virtual trip of Un Paseo Al Agua!

Un Paseo Al Agua is a series of road signs installed throughout Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from 10th and Greenfield moving east towards the Harbor District. These illustrative signs depict the unique and diverse landscapes of the Harbor District — illuminating its industrial past, critical roles in the transportation of people and goods, and more recent development of spaces for public recreation and water access.

The Buried Brook

Join composer and sound artist, Kamala Sankaram, as she discusses the role of international listening, community soundscapes, and her interactive augmented reality sound walk, The Buried Brook.

For this session, attendees will experience a virtual version of the walk. You will also participate in guided listening meditations with the intent of creating a community soundscape capturing the diverse locations of everyone present.

Greenwood Pond: Double Site - continues to make headlines!

As you may know, the Des Moines Art Center made the heartbreaking decision to attempt to dismantle Mary Miss' Greenwood Pond: Double Site. Not only was this installation an important stepping stone for the foundation of CALL, it also functions as an important community space for visitors to explore the wetland.

Recently, a US Federal Judge issued a temporary restraining order against the demolition. While our work is not done, this is an optimistic gesture towards protecting the rights of artists. Read more about it in the articles below:
