Field Recording Workshop and Soundwalk

  • Van Cortlandt Park 115 Van Cortlandt Park South The Bronx, NY United States (map)

Join City as Living Laboratory and composer and sound artist Kamala Sankaram for a free field recording workshop and soundwalk! Using your own mobile device and provided professional audio equipment, you will record a soundscape along Tibbetts Brook in Van Cortlandt Park. From the calls of wildlife to the sound of underwater, your recordings will become part of an interactive sound piece assembled by Sankaram, that will map the historic course of Tibbetts Brook from the bottom of Hester and Piero's Mill Pond to where the stream once emptied into Spuyten Duyvil Creek.

In order to allow for the largest number of participants, we will be holding two separate sessions. The first will be on September 25th and the second will be held on October 9th.

No experience is necessary: participants will be instructed in how to use all necessary equipment, and will also be invited to participate in an artist-led discussion on sonic ecology and the manner in which subaquatic soundscapes might reflect the health and sustainability of an ecosystem.
